HBO's Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon starts filming in Cornwall

Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, has finally gone into production, HBO has confirmed.

The TV network announced earlier this week on social media that they had invited the stars of the upcoming series to take part in a socially-distanced table read.

In the post, that was shared on the House of the Dragon Twitter page, the cast was pictured sitting at spaced-out tables as they read through the script.

Stars at the table read included Paddy Considine and Matt Smith as well as other actors due to appear in the new show, such as Rhys Ifans and Emma D'Arcy.

Alongside the snap, HBO also confirmed that production is underway and that the show would be released in 2022.

The announcement came shortly before some of the House of the Dragon cast were pictured on set at a beach in Cornwall dressed as Targaryens.

In the snaps, taken around Holywell Bay beach, Matt Smith and Emma D'Arcy donned platinum white hair while camera crews swirled around them. The characters appeared deep in conversation as they stood on the sunny beachside.

Confirmation comes after weeks of speculation that Cornwall was one of the UK locations selected for filming (Alamy Live News.)

It comes after weeks of speculation that parts of the new show was going to be filmed in Cornwall after production crews were spotted at various locations in the area.

The new season will focus on the Targaryen family, who are the ancestors of Daenerys Targaryen, who was played by Emilia Clarke.

House of the Dragon is set over 300 years before the storylines that played out in Game of Thrones times - in a time when the Targaryens ruled most of the seven kingdoms - thanks, in part, to their dragons .

Based on George R R Martin's 2018 novel, Fire & Blood, the story follows the war of succession between Targaryen's Rhaenyra and Aegon II - known as the Dance of the Dragons.

HBO has reportedly committed to 10 episodes for the much-anticipated new series.
