HBO responds to House of the Dragon criticism after fans claim episode is 'unwatchable'

HBO has addressed the criticism that the latest episode of House of the Dragon was too dark, which had led viewers to describe the fantasy show as "unwatchable" this week.

The seventh episode of the series – which is a prequel to Game of Thrones – aired on Sunday evening (October 2) in the US and the following morning on Sky Atlantic in the UK.

Although it brought drama in the form of its plot, the episode prompted frustration among viewers – who felt it featured "poor lighting" which made it difficult to watch.

HBO has since addressed the criticism over lighting in the episode, in response to several viewers who took to Twitter in recent days to share their frustration over the issue.

One viewer, who prompted the response, said they would like a "written apology for literally a whole episode of black screen," with them adding that it was "ridiculous".

In a comment shared by support account @HBOMaxHelp, it was said that it had been an "intentional" decision by those behind the show to use dim lighting in the episode.

"We appreciate you reaching out about a night scene in [episode seven] appearing dark on your screen. The dimmed lighting of this scene was an intentional creative decision," it said in response to the criticism by the viewer.

Viewers, however, weren't impressed by the explanation, instead responding that it was a "bad decision." Some said they simply want the show to be watchable.

The Mirror approached WarnerMedia for comment.

House of the Dragon premiered in August and is set to conclude its first season later this month. It has been confirmed that the HBO show has been renewed for a second season.

The show – which is based on works by George R. R. Martin – is set centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, which was broadcast from 2011 until its finale in 2019.

House of the Dragon continues on Sunday (October 9) in the US on HBO and HBO Max at 9pm EST. Episodes are on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK at 2am, repeated at 9pm.
