Game of Thrones: HBO explains last night's coffee cup gaffe

Most of the time, having the most watched TV show in the world is a very good thing.

But as HBO has found out, it can be a double-edged sword when millions of eyes around the world are scrutinising every frame.

Not even a budget of $15 million per episode was enough to stop a blink-and-you'll-miss-it production gaffe making it to air.

**SPOILER WARNING**

The following containers extremely minor spoilers from the fourth episode of the latest season of Game of Thrones.

No plot points will be discussed, but if you want to know nothing about the season, back out now.

Eagle-eyed fans were quick to point out something that definitely didn't belong among the mugs of ale and haunches of meat during a feast in the season's fourth episode.

The rogue coffee cup is definitely real.

In a statement after the episode went to air, HBO confirmed the cup was indeed a mistake.

"The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake," the company said in a statement.

"Daenerys had ordered a herbal tea."

It's hard to get good service when all the realm's baristas have been fighting the Night King, after all.

Of course fans weren't going to let the show off the hook that easily:

It's also not the first time an unexpected coffee has made it into the show:

It's probably best to catch the cup for yourself while you can, given that it's unlikely to make the DVD cut. Adobe showed just how easy it'll be for HBO to remove the cup from the shot:

One of the show's executive producers, Bernie Caulfield, told WNYC that she couldn't believe the cup made it to air.

"Our on-set prop people and decorators are so on it 1,000 per cent. I just honestly can't, I'm like, is that really?" she said.

And despite plenty of people claiming the cup came from the world's most famous coffee chain, the show's art director Hauke Richter told TMZ that the brew actually comes from a local coffee shop in Northern Ireland, not far from where the episode was filmed.
