Hazy Sunday afternoon

Sun, showers, seeds... a perfect afternoon on the plot, perhaps the most productive this year. And, yes, we finally fixed the edging boards. Largely thanks to Donald's work on the soil, you can drive in posts by hand and sycamore seedlings pull up easily, almost as though they expect it...

Sorry to drone on about the sycamore but the whole site is covered in mini bonzai forests, has anyone else noticed this or is it just my own obsession? But when we dug down to the base of the old boards we found many more, like sycamore submarines lurking below the surface.

Anyway, the boards are nearly done (Howard is returning in the week to plug some gaps and add some staves) and the plot is starting to take shape. Between the showers, we laid in rows of herbs (dill from Seedy Sunday, gigante parsley and basil from Franchi, bronze fennel from Borough Market), some Brown Envelope Seeds Spring Salad, another 'four season' Italian salad mix from Franchi and callaloo greens, again from Seedy Sunday. These were the shiniest have almost ever seen, picking them up an oddly liquid movement.

We have planned the beans, three wigwams, less than the legume city from last year that cropped so heavily we could not keep up, though became addicted to Simon Hopkinson's green bean and anchovy salad. Have asked Fern Verrow Jane to see if she can source us more hazel poles as left the old ones with Ruth (though we keep eying them lying on the old plot with almost naked avarice).

So all in all a satisfying Sunday. Now, how was yours?
