'Hazmat' team called in after three men arrested and 'large quantity' of amphetamine seized in police raid

A 'large quantity' of amphetamine was seized - and three men arrested - after a dramatic police raid.

The drugs discovery in Tameside on Tuesday sparked a hazardous chemical alert and firefighters attended as a precaution.

There is no threat to the public, the fire service confirmed.

The Manchester Evening News told today how hazards teams and forensic officers were called to Ashton-under-Lyne yesterday afternoon in the aftermath of the raid.

Several emergency services vehicles were pictured on Welbeck Street South, near Portland Basin Museum.

A tent was put up close to the property involved.

Police have revealed further details of the operation (ASP)

Now Greater Manchester Police have provided further details.

The force said officers from its Serious and Organised Crime Group executed a warrant at an address on the street and three men were detained.

They are aged 26, 31 and 52.

All three were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply class A and B drugs.

None have been named.

In a statement, GMP told the Manchester Evening News : "Three men have been arrested following a warrant at an address in Ashton-under-Lyne yesterday.

"Officers from GMP's Serious and Organised Crime Group attended a property and arrested three men, aged 52, 31 and 26, on suspicion of conspiracy to supply class A and B drugs. They remain in custody at this time.

"A large quantity of amphetamine was found and seized.

"Colleagues from GMFRS also attended the scene as a precaution. Enquiries are on-going."

No further details have been revealed.

The three men remained in custody for questioning on Wednesday.

An eye-witness said they saw police break down the door of a property on the street at around 4pm on Tuesday.

They claimed one man fled the scene over rooftops, but was caught by police and arrested.

"Apparently they found chemicals inside and hazardous materials experts were brought in," the witness said.

"One man tried to flee the scene - it was quite dramatic.

"There were people in protective clothing at the scene."

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said its 'hazardous material team' was sent to the scene to make it safe for the police investigation.

"There is no risk to the public from this incident," said a fire service spokesman.
