Secret Service investigating suspicious package at Trump Tower

Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago. | Rich Hein/Sun-Times

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating after a suspicious package addressed to President Donald Trump was sent to Trump Tower in Chicago.

Authorities were called about 10 a.m. after a “suspicious letter” was received at Trump International Hotel and Tower, 401 N. Wabash Ave., according to Chicago police.

The suspicious package contained an unidentified white powder, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

Police and fire officials responded to the building for a HazMat situation, but the Secret Service took over the investigation after it was determined that the letter was addressed to Trump, police said.

A representative for the Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Further details were not immediately available.
