Sprinkler malfunction sparks evacuation from Melbourne University building

Fire Rescue Victoria evacuated the university building.

More than 100 people were evacuated from a University of Melbourne building after water from a sprinkler mixed with cleaning products sparking fears of a chemical spill.

About 20 firefighters and specialist hazmat crews were called to the incident on Grattan Street in Parkville around 12:15pm to reports of a possible chemical spill.

A university spokesman said water caused damage in a washing facility in an area occupied by the Florey Institute on the sixth floor of the Kenneth Myer building.

The building was evacuated as a precaution, the spokesman said, adding there were no injuries.

The building was closed for cleaning and is expected to reopen on Wednesday.
