'Hazardous' Tullichewan potholes a cause for concern

Action to repair “hazardous” potholes in Tullichewan has been demanded.

Labour councillor Martin Rooney has written to West Dunbartonshire Council’s chief officer for roads, Gail MacFarlane, calling for remedial action to address potholes that blight the estate, after being approached by residents.

Councillor Rooney is concerned about notable potholes on Bannachra Crescent near the children’s playpark and at McCulloch Lane and Hudspeth Court.

He fears that, without remedial action, the potholes will continue to worsen, increasing the risk of damage to vehicles - and the likelihood of road traffic accidents.

Potholes in Tullichewan have been raised as an area of concern by Councillor Martin Rooney (Lennox Herald)

Pointing out that the local authority cut its road budget by almost £70,000 this year, the Leven member commented: “At this time of the year, potholes can be a real hazard for vehicles with ponding and leaves disguising their presence and their depth.

“As well as potentially damaging vehicles they can also cause road traffic accidents when motorists brake quickly or swerve to avoid them.

“Potholes are obviously a hazard for pedestrians young and old, as we all have to cross them and anyone can slip or trip on the uneven surface and injure themselves with twisted ankles or even breaking a bone, so it’s important that we report the hazards.

“I’ve asked the chief officer for roads for remedial action to be taken to repair the potholes in Tullichewan, but I would encourage others to report any others in their streets so that council officers can investigate and organise repairs.”

A West Dunbartonshire Council spokesperson said: “We conduct regular inspections and carry out necessary repairs to ensure the ongoing safety of our roads network.

“This location was inspected within the last four weeks and any issues addressed at the time.

“A programme of resurfacing works will be delivered in the next financial year, and we are currently assessing areas of priority for inclusion within this.”
