'Hazardous materials' found at Scots property as emergency services close road and evacuate

A road has been closed and emergency services scrambled after 'potentially hazardous material' was found in a disused building.

Police and firefighters were called to the property on Cumbernauld Road in Chryston, North Lanarkshire at around 11.37am today.

The road is now closed between Knowe Road and Lyndsaybeg Road while the incident is investigated.

Pictures from the scene today show officers in white suits handling large green plants near a car while firefighters surround the street.

Fire engines with specialist kit have been sent to the scene.

It is unclear at this time what the material is.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Emergency services are currently in attendance at a property on Cumbernauld Road in Chryston following a report of potentially hazardous material.

"Cumbernauld Road is currently closed between Knowe Road and Lyndsaybeg Road as a precaution while police and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance.

"Nobody has been injured and there is not considered to be any wider threat to the public."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We have appliances in attendance.

"The call came into us at 11.37am and we have two appliances with specialist equipment there.

"It is in relation to a hazardous materials incident."
