People evacuated after toxic chemical spill in Sydney's south west

Responders from the hazardous material unit at Fire and Rescue NSW are on scene.

Businesses were evacuated and an exclusion zone set-up following a dangerous chemical spill in Sydney's south west.

About 10 litres of ammonium nitrate leaked from two carriages of a goods train at a rail yard at Greenacre, according to Fire and Rescue NSW.

Ammonium nitrate is the same chemical believed to be responsible for the deadly blast in Lebanon's capital, Beirut last month.

The majority of ammonium nitrate in Australia is used in fertilisers and explosives in the mining sector, as well as a nutrient to produce yeast and some antibiotics.

Emergency services were called to Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre at 12:30pm today following reports the reactive substance had leaked.

Police assisted with evacuations and motorists were told to avoid streets surrounding the rail yard.

The leaking carriages have now been separated from the rest of the train, according to Fire and Rescue NSW.

No ignition sources were found so the area has now been deemed safe and authorities have handed the scene back to owners, Pacific National.

Fire and Rescue NSW said the situation was initially treated seriously to ensure no threat to the community.
