Haynes: Rajon Rondo hoping to return for Lakers Sunday vs. Raptors

The Los Angeles Lakers continued their roll with Friday night’s win over the Miami Heat as they remain the hottest team in the NBA, riding a seven-game win streak and the NBA’s best defense. And they may get some additional reinforcements when they play host to the Toronto Raptors on Sunday.

Rajon Rondo, who has missed the first eight games of the season with a calf injury, is hoping to make his season debut Sunday against the Raptors, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

Rondo played early on in the preseason but hasn’t played since the Lakers returned from their China trip in mid-October. Considering the Lakers are riding the NBA’s longest win-streak, it would be very surprising to see Frank Vogel fix what isn’t broken by inserting Rondo into the starting line-up.

Where it will get most interesting is how Vogel plans his bench rotation. Alex Caruso’s defense has been crucial off the bench while Quinn Cook and Troy Daniels both have strong records as 3-point shooters but have struggled from the outside to begin the season.

Ultimately, it’s hard to imagine Rondo not cracking the rotation if he’s healthy enough to play. Not only because of his experience, but because of his past success alongside Anthony Davis.
