Haymarket opens for first time since Christmas Eve after major works to upgrade Edinburgh's railway

Edinburgh's Haymarket station has reopened with normal service resuming on the city's railway – well, for a Sunday at least.

Trains have been prevented from running through the station since Christmas Eve with major Network Rail upgrades taking place on the line. Four sets of points have been renewed along with more than 250 metres of track at Haymarket East junction.

Replacement buses have been in operation between Waverley and stations to the west of the city, and Edinburgh Live reported on Saturday evening that Edinburgh Park station was expected to be "extremely busy" with ScotRail even laying on extra staff to help with the queues.

However the rail operator confirmed this morning (Sunday) that the project is now complete, with first services back running the 9.30am Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh via Falkirk High, the 10am service running in the opposite direction, the 10.16am Glasgow Central to Edinburgh via Shotts and the 10.26am journey from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central via Shotts.

Network Rail also took to social media to recognise the efforts of team working on the railway over the festive period.

They said: "We've completed the vital upgrade works at Haymarket East Junction. A massive well done to everyone involved in the project, which has been ongoing since 22.50 on Christmas Eve. We renewed four sets of points and replaced over 250m of track too. Thanks, team!"
