Haydock inspect for Saturday after arrival of Storm Christoph but Ascot prospects better

Hopes of Haydock staging its Saturday fixture appear to be fading as an inspection has been called to assess conditions.

Officials will take a look at the track at 8am tomorrow morning, with waterlogged areas a cause for concern.

The meeting is due to feature popular staying handicap the Peter Marsh Chase plus the return of dual Champion Hurdle hero Buveur D'Air.

But after a spell of heavy rain this week and more to come, clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright may unfortunately have to seal its fate on Thursday.

"Storm Christoph is producing this extraordinary mild weather but it has brought lots of rain with it so our prospects for Saturday are slim," he said.

"Parts of the track are waterlogged and it's difficult to see how there will be improvement."

At Ascot, the venue for the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase, the going is expected to ease with up to 15mm of rain in the forecast from this evening.

It is currently soft, but heavy places could be added to the description by raceday, according to clerk of the course Chris Stickels.

This afternoon's Chepstow card passed its 7.30am check, as the rain that fell overnight was not enough to halt proceedings.

Its Going Stick readings are very low however, with 2.6 recorded on the chase course and 2.5 for the hurdles section.

Fences five and six in the back straight will be taken out to avoid some areas of standing water.

Wales' second racecourse, Ffos Las, holds an inspection this afternoon ahead of its planned meeting on Friday.
