It may not have been a glorious way to sign off 2020, but Newcastle's goalless draw with champions Liverpool was a lot closer to what fans want to see from the Magpies.
Steve Bruce's men put in a battling display against Jurgen Klopp's champions to earn a valuable point and give supporters some hope for a better 2021.
And while the visit of Leicester will pose many new challenges for the Magpies, Bruce will feel that his side are at least starting show the competitive edge many have craved all season.
He will, however, have to make at least one change to his side on Sunday.
Isaac Hayden's booking against Liverpool means he picked up a one-match suspension so will miss the game with Brendan Rodgers' high-flying Foxes, while Bruce could also make one or two rotation changes to protect tired legs.
The key issue is who will replace Hayden, with Jonjo Shelvey, Sean Longstaff and Jeff Hendrick all in contention to partner a rejuvenated Matty Longstaff in the centre of the park.
Jamal Lewis could return at left-back or left wing-back, with former United legend Malcolm Macdonald suggesting Matt Ritchie should move inside to a more central midfied role.
Up front, Miguel Almiron was benched against Liverpool but could return, with Jacob Murphy potentially making way.
Karl Darlow's performance on Wednesday came at an important time with Martin Dubrakva back in the matchday squad, but Bruce has reiterated that the former Nottingham Forest man will continue to keep his place for the time being.
