Haycast 08: Tony Juniper and Wangari Maathai

Today's show has a green tinge to it. While there has been precious little opportunity to harness any solar power this week at Hay, green issues have been high on the agenda.

John Harris is sceptical of what general discussions about climate change can achieve. He says it's time to get down to specifics.

Tony Juniper, director of Friends of the Earth, argues that people power can only do so much - governments need to act. He joins Wangari Maathai, Kenyan Nobel Peace Laureate and founder of the African development Green Belt Movement to discuss the gap between individual actions and international politics.

We also hear from festivalgoers with their suggestions on how to make Hay greener.

Children's author Michael Morpurgo founded the charity Farms for City Children with his wife over 30 years ago and environmental themes are ever-present in his books. He tells Michelle Pauli why he thinks it is important for children to experience nature for themselves.

Dannie Abse has always viewed himself as something of an outsider. With the help of fellow Welsh poet Owen Sheers, he explains his inspirations for his most recent volume Running Late, and gives an exclusive reading of his poem North.
