Hawksbill turtle rescued from fishing net in Juhu

MUMBAI: A Hawksbill turtle and two Olive Ridley turtles which were recently found entangled in fishing nets at Juhu beach were rescued by wildlife activists.

While the Olive Ridley turtles did not make it, the Hawksbill turtle responded to treatment and has been successfully released back into the sea.

Marine researcher Harshal Karve told TOI: “The rescued turtles had been shifted to the Marine Animal Treatment and Transit Centre at Airoli, which is equipped with tanks, filtration system, operation theatre, field staff and visiting faculty members. They were treated by Dr Rina Dev, but only the Hawksbill turtle survived.’’

Karveadded that they are spreading awareness among fishermen not to discard their old nets as that can be fatal for sea creatures.
