Hawks' DeAndre Bembry declines to discuss arrest

ATLANTA _ Hawks second-year player DeAndre Bembry declined to address his arrest on charges of reckless driving and speeding following a traffic stop early Friday morning.

Bembry was arrested at about 12:20 a.m. after he had returned with the team from a game against the Magic in Orlando, Fla. He was driving a purple Dodge Charger and clocked going 128 mph in a 55-mph zone on I-85 near Buford Highway, according to Atlanta police.

Bembry was stopped without incident and arrested on the charges.

Bembry declined to speak to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Friday night before the Hawks played the Cavaliers at Philips Arena. The guard/forward, who is out with an injury, went through a pre-game workout.

"There is a legal process that will have to be played out," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said before the game. "There is not a lot I can say. We are gathering, and have gathered, as much information as possible. At this time, that's all I can say."

Budenholzer said he spoke with Bembry.

The team released a statement early in the day following the incident.

"We are aware of an incident involving DeAndre' Bembry earlier this morning," the statement read. "We are still gathering information as it pertains to the situation, and out of respect for the legal process, we will have no further comment at this time."

Bembry, a first-round draft pick in 2016, has been injured for most of the season. He has not played since Dec. 22. He missed 14 games due to a fractured wrist and subsequent surgery to start the season, eight games with a groin strain and 10 games with an adductor strain, including Friday. He did make several appearances with the Hawks' G League affiliate in Erie (Pa.) during his return from the wrist and groin injuries.

In 18 games this season, Bembry has averaged 4.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 17.3 minutes.
