Hawaii To Start Cole McDonald vs. Oregon State

A quarterback decision has been made.

Hawaii football played two quarterbacks in its 45-38 win over Arizona with redshirt freshman Chevan Cordeiro coming in reserve after starter Cole McDonald threw four interceptions.

Cordiero came in relief and looked good by completing 5 of 7 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.

So, there was a good reason to believe that during the bye week, Hawaii would go back and have a quarterback competition to find its starter when it hosts Oregon State for Week 2.

Well, that is not the case as it is being reported that Nick Rolovich is sticking with McDonald as the starter.

Rolovich confirmed the news The Athletic’s Chris Vannini.

This happened last year when Cordeiro came it at times to spell an inconsitent McDonald.

Making a move quickly on this is probably a good move by giving McDonald confidence and take the first team reps in the next two weeks before facing the Beavers.

Rolovich could have spent the two weeks having Cordeiro and McDonald duke it out to be the starter.

This also shows that Rolovich has confidence in McDonald leading this team. Just look at what he did last year with 10 interceptions in 12 games, so the four in Week 0 might have been just an off night.

Sticking with McDonald as the starter is a good move because had Cordeiro been named the starter and struggle that could cause more troubles by going back and forth between the two. That could have led to the season going south in a hurry with inconsistent quarterback play.

However, if McDonald is as erratic as he was vs. Arizona, that could lead to him being benched. By playing possibly the worst team in the Pac-12 should help cure the interception bug that McDonald endured vs. Arizona.
