First Mountain West game canceled

The Patriot League was already canceling games and events that required a flight and/or requiring an overnight stay. The football teams held off for a bit but it was officially announced that Fordham would follow suit with the other Patriot League teams for games that require a plane ride and canceled their Sept. 12 game vs. Hawaii.

Overall, the Patriot League is canceling the first three weeks of the season.

“I’m disappointed for our student-athletes, coaches, staff, and fans that we had to cancel the first three games of the season, but the health and well-being of our student-athletes is our number one priority,” Fordham interim athletic director Ed Kull said in a statement. “When we return to campus, we will follow all guidelines and precautions mandated by the NCAA, the Patriot League, and the University to protect all involved in our program and department.”

This drops Hawaii from 13 games to 12 and is a big loss in revenue to cover some of the Warrior’s long-distance travels, plus it hurts their bowl eligibility. Yes, Hawaii needed seven wins if they played 13 games and now they need just six, but one of the for sure wins was against the Fordham Rams

The odds of Hawaii finding a replacement team is next to none, especially with the travel restrictions placed on people coming to Hawaii from the mainland.

This is not going to be the first disruption to the college football season. The Ivy League is expected to announce this week that all fall sports, which include football, to the spring. The Ivy is not a big league but there are already other lower-division schools will not play football this fall or have canceled outright.

Expect more changes to the upcoming college football season. We have already gone through a lot of options, including a spring season. Teams, leagues, conferences need to be flexible to complete a season or come close to a normal football season.
