DETROIT -- The start of a massive telescope's construction on a Hawaii mountaintop will be postponed for two years until September 2021, Hawaii Gov. David Ige said.
Japan, the United States and three other countries are involved in the Thirty Meter Telescope project to build a telescope atop Mauna Kea on Hawaii Island. The construction was initially planned to start by next month, but it has met opposition from local residents and others for reasons including environmental protection.
The Hawaii state government decided on the postponement at the request of the University of Hawaii and other entities involved in the project.
