'Having a pop at us at a time like this?' Bristol MP and Momentum clash over air pollution vote

Bristol MP Thangam Debbonaire has accused her local Momentum group of spreading "ill informed" rubbish about a vote that would have strengthened air pollution limits in the UK.

The Bristol West MP, who has clashed with Momentum in the past, hit back at the Jeremy Corbyn-supporting group on Twitter when they criticised the city's MPs - with the exception of Kerry McCarthy - from seemingly failing to back the move in parliament, which would have enshrined the World Health Organisation (WHO) guideline for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) into law.

In a now deleted tweet, Momentum Bristol said: "Air pollution kills 5 Bristolians a week. Worldwide it kills more people than ALL DISEASES COMBINED. I'm glad @KerryMP was there to vote for this. Disappointed other Bristol MPs weren't."

Ms Debbonaire pointed out that only five Labour MPs voted for the measure because only five were actually entitled to.

"Exactly the sort of ill-informed rubbish I am heartily sick of," she wrote.

"This was a vote in the Committee Stage of a Bill and only the five Labour MPs on that committee get a vote at this stage. Having a pop at us? At a time like this? And without checking your facts. Just stop it. Now."

She continued: "Here are some more Labour MPs who didn't vote for it either. Jeremy Corbyn. John McDonnell. Dianne Abbott. Richard Burgon. Why? because they weren't on the committee."

In 2017 members of the Bristol West constituency Labour party backed a motion that would have made it easier to deselect Ms Debbonaire in the event of a general election, arguing that they were trying to make the process more democratic.

They signalled they had taken issue with Ms Debbonaire's decision to resign from the shadow frontbench during a protest at Mr Corbyn’s perceived lack of effort during the referendum campaign.

Before the December 2019 general election all Labour MPs had to go through a mandatory reselection process to remain as the party's candidate.

Ms Debbonaire won the support of all of her branches.

Momentum Bristol has been approached for comment.
