Haverfordwest river incident: At least two people dead in tragedy

At least two people have died in a tragic incident on the river Cleddau at Haverfordwest, WalesOnline understands.

Emergency services were called at 9am this morning following reports of "people in distress". There has been a multi-agency response in place ever since, involving the police, fire, ambulance, coastguard and, at one point, four helicopters.

WalesOnline understands that at least two people have died in the incident. One person is also in hospital. Emergency services were pictured searching the water on boats.

A spokeswoman for Dyfed Powys Police said earlier today: "A multi-agency search is taking place of the river Cleddau in Haverfordwest following reports of people in distress in the water. The Quay Street and surrounding areas have been cordoned off, and we are asking the public to keep clear of the area at this time. Ambulance, fire and Coastguard crews, including Coastguard helicopter, are assisting with the search."

Councillor for Haverfordwest, Lyndon Frayling, told WalesOnline: "I have just been updated. I just feel so sorry for the people who have been injured and have lost their lives. I also want to pay tribute to the emergency services who have risked their lives as well.

"I have lived here all my life and have seen that river rise quickly and be very powerful especially after the rain we have had."

The Welsh Ambulance Service said one patient has been taken to Withybush Hospital for treatment. The RNLI said a crew was launched from nearby Angle to help with the search this morning, but has since been stood down.

This is a developing story and we will update it, and our live coverage of the incident, as we get more news. You can follow live updates here.
