Havelock bosses 'knew 250 Fife jobs were at risk a year ago' but kept workers in the dark

Union chiefs are set to demand a full Government inquiry into the shock sacking of almost 250 furniture factory staff.

They claim bosses at Havelock International discussed folding their Fife plant for the last year, without warning the workforce.

They allege that senior managers awarded themselves huge bonuses in the weeks leading up to shock announcement on Thursday.

On Monday, union chiefs will urge the Scottish Economy Committee to launch a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lightning closure.

A GMB union source said: “Since Thursday’s announcement, we’ve discovered the Havelock International board were meeting on a quarterly basis to discuss whether to go into administration that month or not.

“They knew they were in trouble for a long time – without warning anyone or approaching the union to work out a way forward.”

Another source said: “We also need question if any of these directors took bonuses while the company was facing trouble.

“If they did so, there needs to be a full inquiry into why that was allowed to happen.

“The very least the workforce deserve is a full investigation into why they no longer have jobs.”

The Record told yesterday how 247 employees were sacked despite claims the shopfitting company’s order book was full.

The shattered workforce learned of the decision in the morning newspapers and it was officially confirmed at a meeting by administrators from PwC.

Bill Dickson, who was due to notch up 50 years of service with Havelock this weekend, said there was no indication the closure was imminent.

The 66-year-old grandfather of 23 said: “This company has played a central part in my life for half a century.

“In all that time, I’ve never seen anyone treated in such a disgusting manner as I have this week.

“If the company had approached the workforce and the unions, I’m sure we could have come to an arrangement to help keep things moving.”

Havelock is one of Scotland’s leading shopfitters.

Ironically, the firm’s motto is “Bringing life into buildings”.

It was bought out of administration last year by London-based investment specialist Rcapital after a high-street slump hit orders.

PwC last night declined to comment.
