Have your say on what a clean air zone in Bristol could look like

People in Bristol can now have their say on proposals to improve air quality in the city.

Bristol City Council has put forward two proposals for a clean air zone.

One would see diesel cars banned from the city centre for eight hours a day - from 7am to 3pm - in a bid to clean up Bristol’s air.

It would not apply to taxis/private hire or emergency services.

The other “clean air zone” proposal would introduce a range of measures including a bus lane on the M32 and charges of up to £100 for polluting buses, taxis and trucks.

Both schemes would incorporate a city-wide scrappage scheme for people wanting to upgrade their vehicles and other non-charging measures.

The proposals have been put forward by the local authority to meet a government directive to reduce the city’s dangerously high nitrogen dioxide levels to legal limits as soon as possible.

A six week consultation on the two options starts today (Monday, July 1) and there are a number of drop-in sessions planned to give the public the opportunity to discuss the options in more detail.

To have your say visit the consultation page on the council's website.

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees said: “Protecting the most vulnerable from pollution is central to our plans and we have developed the two options which we think strike the right balance, reducing toxic fumes in the shortest possible time but in a way that does not adversely affect the people with lowest incomes or widen the inequality divide in the city.

“We cannot do this alone as individuals. We must come together to take action. The next step involves giving your feedback on the options we have developed. Please tell us how you think it will affect you and what we need to consider.”
