Have your say on the green list and holidays abroad in our travel survey

Holidays abroad are back on the cards for Brits, as the government has confirmed non-essential foreign travel in England can resume from May 17.

Travel will restart under a traffic light system with countries placed on green, amber or red lists that determine quarantine and PCR testing rules when you're back in the UK.

The most appealing of the three for holidaymakers is of course the green list and the first 12 countries and territories have already been revealed; Portugal, the Azores, Madeira, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Falkland Islands and Israel.

Currently only Portugal, Madeira, the Azores, Iceland, Gibraltar and Israel have revealed their plans for welcoming Brits back - and in the case of Iceland and Israel, you'll need to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

But what do you think about the green list - and do you want to travel abroad at all right now, or do you think it's better to stick to UK holidays for the time being?

We want to hear your thoughts in the survey below...

So, how exactly does the traffic light system work?

The green list won't require quarantine, and just one PCR test on day two. Those returning from amber list destinations will need to self-isolate at home for 10 days, and take PCR tests on days two and eight (you can do a test on day five - a negative result will release you early). As for red lists, you'll need to stay in a mandatory hotel quarantine for 10 days with PCR tests on days two and eight.

Regardless of destination, anyone returning from abroad will be required to take a pre-departure test and undertake PCR testing when back.

Covid-19 PCR tests can currently start from £120 - which quickly adds up for families who need to buy multiple tests. (In some cases you also need a PCR test to enter a country at all).

The good news is that a number of travel companies are securing discounted testing kits for their customers, including the likes of TUI, Ryanair, easyJet and British Airways. We've compared travel companies' PCR test prices to give you a helping hand.

It's worth noting that all three traffic lights lists could change, depending on a country's Covid situation. The government has said it will offer a green 'watchlist' to give some warning that a country could go from green to amber, and therefore require self-isolating at home.

As a result, some travel companies are offering flexible policies in case you no longer want to travel because self-isolating doesn't work for you.

For example, TUI lets you amend a trip for free if a green destination goes on the watchlist or amber list, while Thomas Cook has said that if a destination is amber, you can also change your holiday for free.

We’ve got a wider guide for the biggest firms’ rules including TUI, Jet2, easyJet, BA and more - check it out here.
