Lockdown birthday? No problem for the Sign Fairy

It's the Canberra business that opened only a few weeks ago but was tailormade for lockdown - Sign Fairy ACT is spreading the joy to those who can't celebrate their birthday or other significant milestone as usual in the national capital.

The business organises at-home celebration yard signs and decorations, setting up overnight so the person it's for gets a big surprise in the morning.

Sign Fairy ACT is run by Jackie, a Canadian and recent arrival in Canberra, who was encouraged to open the business by a friend who is American and runs a Sign Fairy in Perth.

"She said, 'Why don't you do it over there?' And I sort of um-ed and ah-ed. But I eventually went with it because I thought it was a great way of celebrating someone and an easy way," Jackie said.

"It's been a raging success and lockdown has probably helped with that because parties and other celebrations can't happen but this is a way to help someone feel special. It's been going really well and we really enjoy doing it."

Sign Fairy ACT has already set up more than 50 celebratory displays since starting in August.

Gemma Sargent, an apprentice cabinet maker of Holder, was surprised on Sunday morning for her 21st with a Sign Fairy display on the front lawn, organised by her mother Kerry.

"I had no idea," Gemma said. "She, like, blindfolded me and my sister was distracting me the night before with card games and movies.

"To be honest [I had no words] when I saw it. It was like, 'Wow that's big'. It made me smile. It was good."

Gemma was supposed to be celebrating her 21st with a camping trip to Mystery Bay until lockdown scuttled those plans.

"But, oh well, next year," she said.

Gemma was still thrilled by the effort taken to make her feel special.

"It was a pretty good day, to be honest," she said. "It's a close second to what I wanted."

Jackie, whose background is in accounting, loves being involved in a business that provides so much happiness to people - and an element of surprise.

"We sneak in and we sneak out and go in after dark and give the parent or whoever is organising it an approximate time it'll go up and we'll pick up the signs the following night after dark as well," she said.

Jackie said she was confident the business would continue to go great guns post-lockdown, with bookings already for signs to go up for parties outside the home in places such as local parks.

"It's been really fun for us and a nice way to meet people in Canberra as well," she said.
