How common is it to experience discrimination when taking a flight?
It’s a hot topic of late, with three easyJet passengers from ethnic minority backgrounds grounded in recent weeks over security concerns raised by others travellers, which were later proved to be unfounded.
In the most recent case, Meghary Yemane-Tesfagiorgis was asked to leave the plane as it stood on the tarmac in Rome after a passenger said she felt uncomfortable about him; the details of this incident are scant at the moment, but he claims to have been the victim of racial profiling.
This follows news a British man was removed from a plane by armed police at Luton airport after a fellow passenger read a message on his mobile phone about “prayer” and reported him as a security threat. A detective subsequently questioned and cleared him, but the Nigerian-born Christian said he felt the passenger next to him assumed he was a Muslim and jumped to the conclusion that he may be a terrorist.
