Tens of thousands of people in 60 Spanish towns and cities came out on the streets on Monday to call for a referendum on the monarchy following the abdication of King Juan Carlos.

The protests have been supported by the launch of several online petitions asking the political parties to use this "historical opportunity to promote a public debate that will help regenerate democracy and determine the future of the monarch".
Rallies have been held in solidarity with the Spanish protestors across more than 30 cities in Europe and Latin America.
