Donald Trump has issued an executive order that prevents refugees and travellers from some Muslim-majority countries from entering the US.

The president’s action has suspended the entire US refugee admissions system for 120 days, put in place a 90-day block on entry to the US for citizens from Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, Syria and Somalia, and suspended the Syrian refugee program indefinitely.

The immediate consequences of the order have been chaos and protests at US airports, where some valid visa holders, non-US dual citizens, and US legal residents have been detained. Overseas, multiple people have been barred from boarding US-bound flights. And while federal judges in New York, Virginia, and Massachusetts ordered a temporary halt to the president’s deportation of individuals who had arrived with valid US visas, some border agents have reportedly ignored the temporary stay.

Democrats, faith leaders, civil rights groups and Silicon Valley tech leaders have condemned Trump’s action, saying it goes against the country’s longstanding tradition of opening its doors to refugees. But the White House doubled down on Monday, with one Trump administration official calling the travel ban’s implementation “enormously successful.”
