'Have to cash in' - Bristol City fans react as Niclas Eliasson nears Nimes transfer

Niclas Eliasson is undergoing a medical at Ligue 1 club Nimes with the 24-year-old set to complete a move in the next 24 hours, Bristol Live understands.

Eliasson's expiring contract and refusal to sign a new deal at BS3 has made his departure inevitable with Expressen in Sweden reporting the transfer is worth around €2.5m (£2.25m).

The winger has also found first-team opportunities limited within Dean Holden's 3-5-2 system and a move away appears to suit all parties.

Eliasson will be playing top-flight football, will likely earn a payrise and has a greater chance of earning a place in the Sweden squad for the delayed 2020 European Championships next summer.

Former head coach Lee Johnson had to adapt his system last season to get him into the starting XI, while his two starts this term under Holden have been out of position at left wing-back.

Given how long it's been apparent he's been leaving and how Holden has progressed the team, the response from within the City fanbase has been largely of understanding.

That said, there's still an element of regret from some quarters that he couldn't be retained, as Eliasson undoubtedly brings something to the table and will likely be a big success in France.

Plus there's the memories of all those stepovers ...
