Have Nottingham Forest's chances of signing Jack Colback been dealt a blow?

Nottingham Forest’s chances of signing Jack Colback this summer may have been dealt a blow by the news Rafael Benitez is to leave Newcastle United.

The midfielder has been on the Reds’ wanted list, following an impressive loan spell at the City Ground.

And he has previously made it clear his future would lie away from St James’ Park, having been frozen out under Benitez.

But might that change with a new manager at the helm?

Benitez’s situation has been uncertain for some time, with his contract due to expire and the club in the middle of a potential takeover.

And the Magpies have today announced the Spaniard will depart when his deal runs out at the end of this month.

“It is with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benitez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on 30 June 2019,” said a statement.

“We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.

“Rafa’s coaching staff, Paco de Miguel Moreno, Antonio Gomez Perez and Mikel Antia, will also leave the club on 30 June.

“We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved.

“We would also like to thank our supporters, players and staff for their patience during a period of uncertainty.

“The process to appoint a successor will now begin.”

Colback said back in April: “I don’t see my future at Newcastle.

“I’ve not played there for a good two years now. The manager there made it clear I wasn’t in his plans at that time, and that’s not going to change.”

But with a new boss on the way, the 29-year-old may feel that offers a fresh start and wish to see if Benitez’s replacement is prepared to give him a second chance in the north east.

As reported earlier this month, Forest, while remaining keen on Colback, have been exploring other options – including Southampton’s Harrison Reed.

The finances involved in signing Colback are not straightforward and, while prepared to remain patient in their efforts to secure his signature, the Reds have also been considering other targets.
