Have I Got News For You branded 'surreal' over bizarre isolation format

Have I Got News For You finally returned yesterday, but 'eagle-eyed' viewers might have recognised that something was slightly awry.

The satirical BBC talkshow was forced to alter its format amid the coronavirus pandemic and, as a result, each of the panel members appeared via video link from home.

Missing its usual audience, five monitors sat on the virtual panel as they all spoke from home.

Regulars Paul Merton and Ian Hislop were joined by guest host Steph McGovern and guests Helen Lewis and Miles Jupp.

While viewers congratulated the show for carrying on in spite of the circumstances, they did also admit that the situation was rather odd.

One tweeted: "This is going to be bloody weird when the repeats come on Dave in 5 years time... #HIGNFY."

While another commented: "Oh my God. Socially distanced #HIGNFY. This is one of the most surreal things I’ve seen so far."

A third remarked: "This is the most surreal episode of Have I Got News For You I’ve ever watched (and I’ve watched it for decades!). Odd without the studio audience but as topical and on point as ever! #HIGNFY."

"Can’t remember the last time I laughed so much watching #HIGNFY. Surreal & funny watch," another wrote.

A fan tweeted: "Well, #HIGNFY isn't exactly the same with social distancing, but I'm so glad they're soldiering on - oddly comforting to have our favourite programmes finding an awkward new normal along with the rest of us."
