Have a look at this stunning island up for sale in Shetland

20th-century English poet Sir John Betjeman, said of the island: 'I can think of few nicer places in the world'

AN entire Scottish island could be snapped after going up for sale in Shetland.

The Isle of Vaila has been listed by real estate agent Savills and is up for grabs for anyone who has a spare £1,750,000.

The island boasts stunning coastal views, a historic mansion and a caretaker’s house.

In west Shetland, the island is separated from mainland Shetland by a 10 minute boat trip from its private shore base – which is 27 miles away from Lerwick, Shetland’s capital.

"Fewer nicer places in the world"

According to Savills, 20th-century English Poet Sir John Betjeman, said of the island: "I can think of few nicer places in the world."

The island has a rich history going as far back as 1450 when Norwegian landowners took it over. After generations of Norwegian owners, the island eventually passed over to Robert Cheyne with the approval of King James VI in 1576.

The island’s 17th-century mansion, Valia Hall, was developed from a laird’s house into a grand summer residence in the late 19th century and has a whopping six bedrooms, four reception rooms, a baronial great hall with stone fireplace, full height stained glass windows and a minstrels’ gallery.

For Savills, Luke French commented: “At the meeting point of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, this is a wild and beautiful part of the world. The juxtaposition of the dramatic, elemental land and seascape with the exquisite craftsmanship of historic Vaila Hall makes for a quite extraordinary property.

“A rare prize indeed for the next owner but also one which benefits from practical forethought by the sellers with the shore base building providing ease of access and the farming enterprise, farmhouse and cottage creating a variety of opportunities.”
