Have-a-go shop keeper grapples with knife wielding thug in robbery bid

A brave Paisley shopkeeper grappled with a knife-wielding raider who demanded cash from the till.

The 38-year-old man wrestled the blade thug who was forced to flee from the Gallowhill Road shop on Wednesday night.

Cops yesterday revealed the would-be-thief threatened the member of staff but was shocked when he bravely fought back.

It’s understood the victim grabbed the knife from his attacker’s hand during the rammy, which happened around 6.15pm.

The suspect fled on foot and the police were called.

Detectives are now checking CCTV and carrying out a range of enquiries in a bid to identify the suspect.

The shop was open to customers yesterday but staff were remaining tight-lipped about the incident when visited by the Paisley Daily Express.

Chief Inspector Rhona Fraser, area commander for Paisley, said police are carrying major investigation to snare the brute.

She said: “A male entered the Gallowhill Licenced Grocers shop in Gallowhill Road, Paisley and threatened a 38-year-old male member of staff with a bladed weapon.

“Although the victim was not injured, this must have been a terrifying experience for him.

“Our investigation is at an early stage but we are carrying out a number of enquiries in the area to establish who is responsible for this despicable crime.”

She added: “We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the Gallowhill Road area of Paisley at around 6.15pm on Wednesday evening to think if they may have seen a suspicious male in the area perhaps loitering close to the shop.

“I’d also ask anyone who may have been driving in the area to check dash cam footage to see if you captured anything which may be of significance to our investigation.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
