Haunting sound as Storm Christoph sweeps through high-rise 'wind tunnel' near Temple Meads

A haunting howling noise was captured on camera as Storm Christoph battered Bristol with high-speed winds.

The video was filmed near Temple Meads last night (Tuesday, January 19) as gusts reached 30mph, sweeping through a row of tall buildings under construction along Avon Street.

A loud whistling noise can be heard in the clip, audible even above the sound of a passing car, on an otherwise eerily empty street.

Several large apartment blocks are being built along the length of Avon Street and along neighbouring Anvil Street, which runs parallel.

Some of these form part of the new Temple Quarter development, which is set to transform an area around Temple Meads in the next 25 years.

Similar whistling noises were filmed along the same street in November, also during high winds.

Wind tunnels can be a side-effect of high-rise construction, although it is not clear if that was the cause here.

In 2019, the City of London drew up tougher building guidelines for skyscraper developers, due to concerns about the creation of wind micro-climates at ground level and the potential for cyclists to be blown off-course.

The rules in the capital only apply to buildings above 25m in height, and require developers to carry out computer simulations or wind tunnel testing prior to the build.

Storm Christoph has prompted the Met Office to issue an amber "danger to life" warning, covering Yorkshire, the North West, East Midlands and the east of England today (Wednesday).

Bristol and the South West has a less serious yellow weather warning, which will remain active until midday tomorrow (Thursday).

More blustery conditions are predicted throughout the day, with the Met Office forecasting gusts in excess of 40mph for Bristol.
