Haunting pictures inside disused Welsh primary school as it goes up for auction for £300,000

An disused Edwardian primary school is going under the hammer with a guide price of £300,000.

Ambitious DIY-ers now have the chance to get their hands on the former Glynhafod Junior School in Cwmaman when it comes to auction later this month.

Based in the mining village near Aberdare, the primary school once served 83 pupils with its three classrooms, staff room, library, offices and kitchen. Its location, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has recently been named the UK's top lockdown renovation hotspot.

Built in 1911, the school closed its doors in 2018 and has since stood unused - with its windows boarded up and hopscotch squares still marked out in the playground.

But now after years without any pupils to bring it to life the building is up a new adventure for those brave enough to take on a project.

While the building's brick exterior may look a little severe with its metal sheets in front of the doors, the future owners of the school will be able to make the most of a large hall with airy windows and what appears to be parquet flooring once they are handed the keys.

Wood panelling lines the room, while ornate designs draw your attention upwards to the high ceiling.

Moving onto its three classrooms, bright primary colours adorn the walls and floors - blue in one room where a Welsh flag hangs from the wall, while another yellow classroom still has its whiteboard on the wall.

A third stands empty, with just two displays still showing off work and notices from its last term before its pupils were sent on their way.

As well as teaching space, the former school offers a staff room, library, two offices, kitchen, store rooms, toilet facilities and a boiler room, spanning a total of around 5,726 sq ft.

Meanwhile outside there is a large former playground, play area and parking, with the entire site covering approximately 0.75 acres.

With stunning views onto the hillside behind it, it means the building has buckets of potential for developers, if the right person should come along.

James Ashworth, Landwood Property Auctions director, said: “This is a rare opportunity to buy a former primary school situated in the heart of the Welsh Valleys.

“Located in the residential area of Cwmaman, it lies just two miles away from the town of Aberdare.

“It also benefits from being a short distance away from the major Welsh cities of Cardiff and Swansea.

“We believe the site offers a great opportunity for buyers as it has a potential for future development, if the necessary permissions are granted.”

Landwood Property Auctions are offering the property, situated just 18 miles north of Cardiff and 20 miles east of Swansea, for a guide price of £300,000 to £325,000, as part of their online auction on June 30. You can find out more here.
