'Haunting' light display and vigil planned outside Holyrood on Brexit Day

Campaigners are planning to create a "haunting" light display outside the Scottish Parliament to mark the moment the UK leaves the EU on January 31.

Protests have already been organised for Brexit day, with a vigil and demonstration outside Holyrood starting at 6pm.

The UK will cease to be a member of the EU at 11pm. The Scottish Parliament building will cease to fly the EU flag on a permanent basis at this time.

Ellen Höfer, of the EU Citizens for an Independent Scotland campaign group, is raising money for a "haunting, reflective and visible" temporary art installation in the ponds outside the building.

She told Edinburgh Live it would involve small candles places in 28 bowls floating in the top pool, representing the 28 EU member countries.

When the clock strikes 11pm, one of the candles will be transferred.

She said: "We'll be using the top pond for the main installation, the smaller one below for the UK bowl. There is a 29th bowl, sitting on the land tongue (close to but not among its EU pals).

"The UK flame will be transferred to the Scotland bowl as a symbol of keeping the European spirit alive."

Ellen is trying to raise £450 for the installation on Go Fund Me. It is titled Keeping a Light On for the EU, and is inspired by a speech by the MEP Alyn Smith.

Ellen added: "After this, everyone attending is invited to add white and yellow roses to the wee land tongue and pond.

"Both the white rose project and the yellow rose campaign are quite pertinent to this occasion - affront to democracy and solidarity with EU citizens."
