Haugh of Urr's Jo Muir experiences "the biggest rollercoaster of emotions" in Olympic modern pentathlon

Haugh of Urr’s Jo Muir experienced “the biggest rollercoaster of emotions” in the Olympic modern pentathlon.

The 26-year-old came home 14th on her Olympic debut as Team GB colleague Kate French stormed to victory in Tokyo.

But Muir felt she could also have returned home with a medal and was critical of her displays in the fencing and swimming rounds, after which she was 31st out of the 36 competitors.

Posting on her Facebook page following the conclusion of the competition, she said: “The last 48 hours have been the biggest rollercoaster of emotions.

“I’m incredibly proud of my amazing team-mate and great friend Kate French.

“She is the most beautiful, humble, down to earth person, a phenomenal athlete and has dominated the rankings for the last five years.

“No one deserves this medal more than her.

“On the other hand I’m gutted I wasn’t able to share the podium with her or even get close as I completely and utterly under performed in the first two disciplines and that is something that’s so hard to take.

“I came into the games ranked number six in the world and really wanted to show what I had on the greatest stage.

“In the end I gave it everything I had to fight back and finish
14th.

“My whole experience has been amazing and has inspired me more than I could have imagined.”

The action began on Thursday with the fencing, Muir’s record of 13 wins and 22 defeats seeing her in 33rd position.

Things resumed on Friday in the pool, her time of 2:14.52 moving her up to 15th.

It was back to the fencing after that for the bonus round, Muir’s results seeing her back in 31st.

But she put in a great display in the riding, picking up just one penalty to move up to 21st ahead of the laser run.

By this stage supporters were gathering in the beer garden at The Laurie Arms in Haugh of Urr to cheer her on, with parents Susan and Andy joined by family and friends to watch the action unfold at Milton Park Farm.

And another great display in the laser run – which combines running and shooting – saw her come home 14th with team-mate Kate French winning the gold medal.

There was further success for Team GB in the men’s event on Saturday morning with Joe Choong also winning gold.
