Hatton Garden heist ringleader told to 'sell £640,000 home or return to jail'

The ringleader of the Hatton Garden raid has been told he will be sent back to jail if he fails to sell his £640,000 home and two luxury properties.

Brian Reader, 80, had almost completed construction of the two properties behind his home when he undertook the £14million heist in 2015.

The Court of Appeal ordered Reader to sell the buildings, in Dartford, Kent, in order to help repay the £6.6million that has yet to be recouped from the burglary.

The retired car salesman was handed a six-year prison sentence in 2015, but he was released after less than three years.

John Collins, Terry Perkins, who died in prison last year, and Daniel Jones were all jailed for their roles in the burglary and became known as the Diamond Wheezers in the press.

Woolwich Crown Court heard that the men made more than £13.6million out of the raid, during a confiscation hearing last year.

Reader hoped the money would help him to finish off building the houses in his garden, according to The Sun .

One of his neighbours told the newspaper: "They began building a few years ago but all work has been stopped.

"Apparently he wasn't able to pay the builders and was hoping the money from the heist could have helped pay them off."

Reader was previously jailed for handling stolen gold from the 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery, in which a gang made off with £26million worth of bullion, diamonds and cash.

The robbery was described as 'the crime of the century'.
