Hats off to Newcastle Racecourse ladies as rain fails to dampen their style

If you could bet on anything at Newcastle's Ladies Day, it's that hardy northerners - and our visitors from further afield - would not disappoint in appearance.

And so it was the case on a rainy Saturday at Gosforth Park where trend-setters and fashionistas were clearly out in force with a fabulous range of headwear that could not fail to catch the eye.

And, while the threat of rain had been widely forecast, glamorous women didn't shy away from showing off the very best hats and fascinators - and that in-between-size 'hatinator'.

Grand affairs featured lots of feathers and flowers and hats came in all colours - many coordinated with dresses or shoes - as well as sizes, with big seen as better in many cases.

Ladies Day is always seized upon as a chance to see and be seen and there could be no denying on Saturday that the annual showcase has earned its proud place as a social highlight of the year.
