The second serving of this year's Newcastle Beer & Cider Festival did not go unnoticed on Thursday - not least because those who turned up proved to be every bit as eye-catching as the array of ales on offer.
A colourful selection of weird and wonderful hats were sported by festival-goers as well as those behind the bar.
Thursday is always hat day at the annual event - a quirky addition to the long-running programme which helps to raise money for St Oswald's Hospice.

And, in keeping with the slogan 'if you want to get ahead, get a hat', people proved keen to advance the good the cause by adopting as unusual an item of headwear as possible.
The inventive mix included military caps, home-made creations, mortarboards, knitwear, trilbies, cowboy hats and showpiece wedding-style attire.
Over the years, St Oswald has raised thousands of pounds at a stall selling unsold hats from its shops to those attending the festival without one.

The long-running festival, which opened on Wednesday following a local breweries Battle of the Beers Newcastle's Battle of the Beers - who won this year's festival competition? , is continuing at Northumbria University Students Union until Saturday.
