Hats off to Grayson Perry’s Essex girl tribute to everywoman Julie

Grayson Perry
Grayson Perry has revealed his secular chapel to Essex everywoman Julie.

The wrappers have come off Grayson Perry’s latest Channel 4 project, his “secular chapel” in tribute to Essex Woman and in particular a mythical Essex everywoman called “Julie”. The grand design is taking shape in Wrabness, Essex, and is described as the Turner prize winner’s “biggest, riskiest and most ambitious work of art yet”. It was designed in collaboration with Charles Holland of FAT Architecture and is being built in association with Living Architecture and will feature in a Channel 4 documentary, Grayson’s Great Design, later this year. Look closely and you might see one of the 400 relief tiles depicting Julie, along with four roof sculptures and a series of tapestries. It’s also a rather lovely hat.

• This article was amended on 17 July 2015 to make clear that the design of the house was a collaboration between Grayson Perry and Charles Holland of FAT Architecture.
