Hatem Elhamed offered Celtic escape route as former club make approach for homesick defender

Hapeol Be'er Sheva have made an approach to bring unsettled Celtic defender Hatem Elhamed back to his former club in Israel on loan.

The 29-year-old Israeli international revealed earlier this month he and his family have failed to settle in Scotland after signing for Celtic last summer and that alerted four Israeli clubs - Hapeol Be'er Sheva, Maccabi Haifa, Beitar Jerusalem and Maccabi Tel Aviv - to his availability.

Celtic have made clear they want to recoup most of the £1.6million they splashed out to sign him from Be'er Sheva in July last year, but that's out of the price range of all interested the clubs in his homeland.

Now his former side Be’er Sheva have made the first move to bring him home by offering to pay money to land him on loan until the end of the season with an option to buy later.

Hapoel boss Yossi Abukasis admitted earlier he was desperate to sign Elhamed. He said: "Hatem is an excellent player that every team would want to sign.

"If we can bring him here to the club it will be a huge blessing for us."

Elhamed spent two years at Be'er Sheva previously, before moving to Parkhead. He's made 20 starts for the Hoops in all competitions, but hasn't been involved since a dead rubber 4-2 Europa League defeat at AC Milan at the start of the month.
