'Hate crime' pub graffiti blasts cost of Queen's funeral while 'country starves'

Anger has erupted over the reported costs of the Queen's funeral while the "country starves".

Grafitti has appeared outside of the Louden Tavern in Glasgow claiming yesterday's funeral cost £7million - although the official figure has yet to be released by the Palace.

The green spray-painted message reads: "€8 million funeral while our country starves."

There was another anti-royal message spray-painted nearby it reading "F*** the King".

Vandals spared no time in scrawling their message less than 24 hours after the state funeral for the late Queen Elizabeth I I, which the pub branded a "hate crime".

Further down the road, more graffiti in white lettering appeared on a brick wall saying "Lizzie's in a box", GlasgowTimes reports.

Over the past week, thousands of mourners flocked to London to pay their respects during the Queen's Lying in state ceremony and many lined the streets in the capital and Windsor to say a final farewell.

Her Majesty's coffin was laid to rest in St George's Chapel in Windsor yesterday as millions around the world watched her 70-year reign officially come to an end.

The pub put a statement on Facebook that read: "The Louden Tavern: Ibrox Stadium has a history of helping the local community without prejudice.

"We find it really sad that there are uneducated people walking our streets that would be involved in this unwarranted vandalism against our business.

"Despite this, we will continue to support local good causes.

"The irony is that the graffiti will be cleaned by the council and therefore money diverted from other causes due to it being a hate crime. ‬

"Thank you to everyone who continues to support us."

One person wrote in response: "Didn't realise the Louden was organising the funeral. That IS expensive, lads. Maybe should have been less ostentatious with the buffet."

Another added: "These folk don’t care about facts though, just bigotry."

It comes as Downing Street today said that the cost to taxpayers of the Queen’s state funeral, lying-in-state and other public events will be published “in due course”.

It confirmed the government will issue a final figure for the grand ceremonies, which captivated the nation and were attended by hundreds of thousands.

The Queen Mother’s funeral 20 years ago cost an estimated £2.1million for police and £825,000 for her lying in state.

Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011 cost £3.8m in additional police costs, which included giving all PCs and Sergeants double pay because the day was declared a bank holiday.

But estimates for the cost of the Queen's funeral, also declared a bank holiday, have varied wildly. The Full Fact website suggests previous such events cost around £8million in today's money.

The Mirror contacted the Louden Tavern and Police Scotland for a statement.
