'Hasn’t worked out' - Liverpool sent Naby Keita transfer message amid Anfield exit rumours

Former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann believes his old club should now concede that the signing of Naby Keita has not worked out and look to sell him this summer.

The midfielder arrived at Anfield to much fanfare in a £52.75million deal from German side RB Leipzig back in 2018, but has so far flattered to deceive at the club.

Keita has also been plagued by injuries that have stopped him from getting regular minutes since his arrival on Merseyside.

Last season was also one to forget for the midfielder, with him being hauled off three minutes before half-time in his side’s Champions League quarter-final first leg defeat at Real Madrid.

And after making just ten Premier League appearances during the last campaign, rumours have increased in recent weeks that Keita could leave Liverpool this summer.

And Hamman believes the 26-year-old does not suit Liverpool’s style and has urged the Reds to cash in on the Guinean this summer.

“It’s been three years now and you have to say he’s struggled to make his mark”, the German told The Athletic.

“There’s been a gulf between the expectation levels when he came in and what he’s been able to deliver. It just hasn’t worked out.

“He’s had a lot of injuries and when he has played he hasn’t done enough. He can’t have any complaints — too often he’s been given chances and not taken them.

“He doesn’t link play particularly well, he likes to run with the ball and do his own thing. I just don’t really see where he fits into this Liverpool team going forward.

“I can’t see there being much of a market for him in England, but his stock is still pretty high in Germany from what he did at Leipzig.

“You’d be lucky to get more than £15 million for him. Sometimes you just have to accept something hasn’t worked out and move on.”

But speaking back in May, Jurgen Klopp was adamant that Keita's long-term future remains at Liverpool.

He said: "You need stability in a football team. Other teams are too good to allow you to make eight or nine changes.

"That has hurt a few of our players this year. Naby was injured and it took a while for him to come back.

"He trains really well, I have to say, like a lot of other players he looks really well in training but this year we need stability.

"We will make changes from time to time, definitely, but it's not like we can change seven, eight, nine players and expect to win a game.

"But the long-term future of Naby Keita from my point of view is here, yes. "
