Haskell Garrett told police that he was breaking up a fight when he was shot

According to the Columbus Dispatch (subscription may be required), Ohio State defensive tackle Haskell Garrett reported to the Columbus Police that he was breaking up what appeared to be a fight when he was shot early Sunday morning.

Reports surfaced over the weekend that Garrett had been admitted to the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center after police followed a trail of blood and found the 6-foot, 2-inch, senior out of Las Vegas with a non-fatal bullet wound to the “cheeks of the face.”

Garrett said he was walking toward the 400 block of Chittenden Avenue when he noticed a couple “arguing and being aggressive” according to a police report obtained by the Dispatch. He then asked the man to stop arguing and that’s when the male fired his handgun and shot Garrett.

There are still no suspects in the shooting, and Garrett said that he did not know the man. He was released from the hospital Monday.

Ryan Day issued the following statement in relation to the incident.

“Haskell Garrett has been receiving excellent care at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for the injuries he received on Sunday,” Day said. “We anticipate he will be released from the Medical Center this morning.

“On behalf of his family and this football program, we would like to thank all those who have been a part of Haskell’s treatment and we are grateful that he will be heading home today. We will continue to help him and his family any way we can to expedite his recovery”
