Has Manchester's heatwave broken any records this week?

There's no denying it has been sweltering hot in Manchester this week.

Even a few overnight thunderstorms haven't been enough to cool things down significantly.

Temperatures have been in the high 20s, even creeping past 30C at some points, since Friday last week.

But have we broken any records?

The top temperature recorded in Manchester on Wednesday (August 12) was 30.7C, according to the Met Office.

That's still three whole degrees off Manchester's hottest ever August temperature though.

Met Office data shows that the hottest day recorded in Manchester in August was in 1990 when it hit 33.7C.

That was at the weather station at Ringway, where the airport is.

But the mini-heatwave of August 2 and 3 in 1990 also saw temperatures reach 32.1C in Bolton and 31.8C in Stockport

An even hotter day was recorded in Greater Manchester in July just last year however.

On July 25 in 2019, a scorching 33.9C was recorded in Rochdale.

So despite it being hot out there, we've not been breaking any records this week.

on Thursdays, temperatures across Greater Manchester dropped to the mid 20s.

It looks as though the heatwave of the last few days is coming to a close with a slightly cooler, and perhaps even wet, weekend predicted.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms will be in place until noon on Saturday.

According to the Met Office website, tomorrow's forecast is: "A rather cloudy and warm day, although coastal areas should still see plenty of sunshine and very warm temperatures.

"Remaining dry, with the odd shower in the far south. Maximum temperature 27 °C."

And for the weekend: "Sunny spells and the occasional shower on Saturday.

"These showers should intensify through Sunday and Monday, potentially turning thundery.

"Less hot then previous days, but still warm and humid throughout."
