Has a connection between Bryan Kohberger and the Idaho 4 victims finally been established?

Idaho prosecutors have long maintained they were unable to “prove” a link between Bryan Kohberger and any of the University of Idaho students he killed in November 2022, nor could they state who among the four Kohberger targeted.

However, one potential link between Kohberger and two of the victims has now been revealed, suggesting one online theory might be correct. In July 2025, Kohberger changed his plea to guilty for the brutal murders of four University of Idaho college students, Maddie Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle.

According to experts who were going to testify at BryanKohberger’s trial this year, there was evidence to suggest that he had been close enough to the place #XanaKernodle & #MaddieMogen worked due to his phone connecting to the restaurants WiFi! #foryou #fyp

Through the lengthy investigation, it was learned that roommates Kernodle and Mogen worked at a vegetarian restaurant called the Mad Greek in Moscow, Idaho, where the University of Idaho (U of I) is located.

It was long speculated then that Kohberger, a criminology graduate student at Washington State University, not far from Moscow, may have first seen one or both of them there before the attack.

Now, we’ve learned that an expert witness, set to testify at Kohberger’s trial before he changed his plea, was ready to tell the court that, while Kohberger effectively covered his digital tracks, investigators were able to prove Kohberger’s phone connected to the Mad Greek’s Wi-Fi at least once.

The expert noted that Kohberger’s phone “passively” logged into the Mad Greek’s Wi-Fi, raising the possibility that Kohberger’s phone did it automatically without Kohberger’s knowledge if he happened to be in the area, likely contributing to the prosecutors’ decision to declare no definitive link could be found.

Still, it proves that Kohberger was near the Mad Greek before November 2022, and in the minds of many, the coincidence is too much to ignore. People had previously reported that Kohberger had been at the Mad Greek at least once for vegan pizza.

Kohberger tried to hide his digital tracks

Mad Greek aside, digital forensic investigators probing Kohberger’s devices uncovered several deliberate efforts to hide his online activity. According to court filings, he powered off his phone using a manual button press during the two hours when the murders occurred and then turned it back on afterward, indicating intent rather than accidental loss of signal

In the days before and after the killings, he disabled Wi-Fi and routed internet traffic through a VPN, another unusual and calculated step.

Forensic experts also discovered that Kohberger downloaded PDFs of serial-killer case files and criminal-psychology reports, suggesting premeditated research rather than academic interest. Meanwhile, search warrants were issued for his social media and internet accounts, as well as phone and browsing history, showing attempts to erase his activity.

But while no prior relationship was known, the prosecution’s case was built on a strong chain of circumstantial evidence linking him to the murders. This included DNA evidence found on a knife sheath at the crime scene, his phone data showing he stalked the victims’ home, and surveillance footage of his car in the area.
