Haryana: Two held with Khair wood worth Rs 50 lakh in Ambala

AMBALA: The crime investigation agency (CIA)-I of Ambala police arrested two accused persons after recovering about 25 tonnes of peeled khair (senegalia catechu) wood worth Rs 50 lakh from their possession in Kala Amb area under Naraingarh police station on Friday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Vinod Kumar and Raju, both residents of Pawti village in the Sambhalkha area of the Panipat district.

Ambala superintendent of police (SP) Jashandeep Singh Randhawa said that both accused Vinod and Raju were produced in the district court at Naraingarh. The court sent Vinod on nine-day police remand with CIA-I and sent Raju to judicial custody.

The SP said that the CIA-I team had received the tip-off that a Uttar Pradesh (UP) numbered truck loaded with illicit Khair wood would be passing through the Naraingarh area via Kala Amb.

He said a checking post was laid near Markanda Dhaba in Naraingarh area and suspected vehicles were checked, when a truck loaded with khair wood was caught.

"The accused persons could not produce any document related to the sale and purchase of the khair wood and therefore, the wood was seized and accused were arrested", said SP Ambala.

Meanwhile, on the complaint of ASI Dara Singh of CIA-I, the Ambala police have registered a case under Section 2 and 41 of the Indian Forest Act and 379 (theft) and 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Naraingarh police station on Friday.

Ambala CIA-I in-charge inspector Sandeep Singh said, "We have taken Vinod on police remand. The recovered peeled khair wood is about 25 tonne in quantity with the value of about Rs 50 lakh. We are verifying the facts from where the accused brought this wood and where was it destined."
