Haryana: Three including infant killed after tree fell on shanty in Pehowa

KURUKSHETRA: Two women and an infant were killed after a eucalyptus tree fell on their shanty in Pehowa town of Kurukshetra district on Tuesday morning, amid rainfall and winds.

The deceased have been identified as Karishma (19), her five-day old daughter, and Karishma’s mother-in-law Hema (41). The family natively belongs to Alwar in Rajasthan, but they were living in shanties in Pehowa town.

On receiving the information, the police reached the spot and rushed the victims to the civil hospital in Pehowa, where the doctors declared them brought dead.

The police said six people were sleeping in a shanty when a eucalyptus tree collapsed on them, following which, three were killed and three had a narrow escape.

Karishma’s husband Chand, said: “Karishma got discharged from the hospital on Monday after she delivered a child there. We were sleeping and the tree collapsed all of a sudden."

Chand, his younger brother and cousin escaped unhurt in the incident. Chand with his family and some more families had been living in shanties along the road for the last several years.

SHO Pehowa Sadar police Jaswant Singh said: "We got information about a tree falling on a shanty around 6.30am and teams were rushed. The victims were taken out from under the tree and rushed to hospital, where three were declared dead. The dead bodies have been shifted to the mortuary after postmortem."
